Paul Laurence Dunbar Home at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park
219 South Williams Street, Dayton, OH 45407

The home of one of America's most beloved poets serves as a focal point in celebrating the life and legacy of Dunbar. The Dunbar House, a National Historic Landmark, appears today much as it did at the time of the poet's death in 1906. On June 27,1938 the sixty-sixth anniversary of Dunbar's birth, the House became the first publicly-owned African American historic site and first African American home in America to be designated as a public museum.

Paul Laurence Dunbar achieved national and international acclaim in a literary world that was almost exclusively reserved for whites. This gifted and prolific writer produced a body of work that included novels, plays, short stories, lyrics, and over 400 published poems. His work, which reflected much of the African American experience in America, contributed to a growing social consciousness and cultural identity for African Americans in the United States.

In addition to the Dunbar House which is owned and managed by the Ohio Historical Society, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park maintains a cooperative relationship with four additional partners:  Aviation Heritage Foundation, Inc.; Aviation Trial, Inc.; Dayton History at Carillon Park and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
